The American Library Association recognizes book titles that are challenged, removed or banned from American schools and libraries in its annual Banned Books Week, late September. Many of these titles includes classics and other works found to be objectionable by parents, teachers, religious leaders and “those” who feel they should censor what “we” choose to read…for our own good, no doubt.
In an effort to sell books without a concern for issues of politics, sex, religion or those that are seen to be “socially offensive”, Anthology defends our freedom to read! Join us Saturday September 25 at 2pm for a community “read out”. The details can be found on our Events page.
“The Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck, 1939. Censure: Burned in California, New York and Illinois; challenged or banned in 10 states. Granma and Grampa Joad: The Joads are damn proud of their cussin’ brood - that kind of language helped get Steinebeck’s masterpiece blacklisted across the country…” - Betsy Towner, AARP Bulletin
