The way I see it, independent (local) bookstores, in addition to fostering a spirirt of community that they not only represent, but also preserve, are the only brick & mortar venues where a new (unknown) author can get their books displayed and sold. That same opportunity simply doesn’t exist at the big chain stores where competition from the ‘big six’ publishers squeeze the little guy & gal out.

Many times, it’s because of the dedicated support that the indies provide that local authors have any chance of leveling the playing field somewhat. That said, I most definitely support the local bookstores!
